Pendleboard: Designed in Mauritius

matt-pendleThe Pendleboard has been developed and designed in Mauritius from the very beginning.  Designer, Mat Pendle lives and surfs in Tamarin Bay in the islands south west.

Mat has been surfing the breaks of Mauritius, on various surf craft, for many years, and in 2013 was contemplating the benefits of the different designs for Stand Up Paddle (SUP).  He had been manufacturing watersports equipment for many years,  and understood the materials and limitations of different design method.

The short drive from his house to the Bay was enough to eliminate the option of walking or riding a bike or skateboard with his surfboard.   So for a while he was packing the larger surfboards onto his car.  This was cumbersome and slow and sometimes he found himself opting not to go due to the inconvenience of it all.

The inflatable boards he had manufactured for cruising up Tamarin River were great, but not much use on the fast steep waves of the bay.  Also their size meant quite a orkout to get them inflated each time.  He ultimately would choose to leave them inflated and transport them like a normal fibreglass board on the roof or hanging out of the truck.

The design limitations of the two types of board, the inconvenience of their size, and Mats lateral thinking led him to develop a hybrid, fibreglass and inflatable board.  The first prototype was tested around the reef breaks of Mauritius.  Now this concept, developed in the small town of the small island in the western Indian Ocean, is making, and catching waves around the world.
